What is a share?

A share is an ownership interest in a private limited company. When you buy a share, you become a co-owner and gain the right to your proportion of the value the company creates.

Why invest in shares?

The most common reason to invest in shares is to make money, with an expectation of a better rate of return than in the bank. As a shareholder, you can make money in two ways: by receiving annual dividends, or by selling the shares for more than you paid for them.

Dividends are the portion of the profit that the company chooses to pay out to shareholders each year, instead of retaining it in the company. In our Savings app, you can get a full overview of your potential dividend payments quickly and easily.

Which shares should you buy?

What and how much you should buy depends on your finances and the risk you are willing to take. Familiarise yourself with the companies you are interested in, and look at their future prospects. As a customer, you gain access to daily and weekly share tips from our award-winning analysts.

How to trade shares

  • Step 2 – Find the share you want to buy by clicking "search" at the top of the page on the right. Enter the name of the company, or the ticker if you know it (a ticker is an abbreviation of the company name, e.g. EQNR for Equinor).

  • Step 3 – Click "Buy" – the blue button to the right of the share name. This will display an overview of your own trading accounts. Select a trading account and fill in the purchase form.

  • Step 4 – Enter the number of shares you want to buy and the maximum price you are willing to pay (the number is sometimes called "volume" and the maximum price is often called "limit").

  • Step 5 -Enter how long the order (your bid for the shares) must be valid by clicking on the date below the total amount, maximum 30 days.*

  • Step 6 -Press "Next". You will receive a summary of the order and will be asked to confirm the purchase once more before it is sent to the exchange. If the exchange is open and someone in the market is willing to sell you the number you want at that price, the purchase happens immediately.

  • Step 7 -As soon as the purchase is completed, you will receive a receipt. The shares will appear in "Portfolio" under "My profile."

*30-day validity on orders applies only to the Nordic exchanges: the Oslo Stock Exchange, Helsinki Stock Exchange, Stockholm Stock Exchange and Copenhagen Stock Exchange. For the other exchanges, only day orders apply.

You always get the lowest possible price

Prospera has named us the best brokerage in Norway for ten consecutive years, largely thanks to Smart Order Routing (SOR).

With our Smart Order Routing, share prices and availability are checked across a range of marketplaces in a fraction of a second. Rather like an ultra-fast price-comparison algorithm. Your buy order is then filled at the lowest possible price. When you sell, it's the opposite — SOR secures the highest price. The brokerage fee you pay can quickly be recouped.
