What is contents insurance?

Contents insurance covers the value of the belongings in your home. Home contents and movable property are the same as items you own and use at home. These are things that can be moved and relocated, as opposed to fixed installations that are part of the building.

Examples of home contents are clothes, furniture, electronic equipment, sports equipment, bicycles, lawnmowers and so on. Items stored in the cellar, loft and garage are also considered home contents.

Contents insurance when renting

Both the landlord and the tenant must have their own contents insurance to be covered.

For you as a tenant

A tenant is not considered a permanent member of a household and is not covered by the landlord's contents insurance. Whether you live in a bedsit, share a flat or rent an apartment, you should have insurance that covers your belongings.

For landlords

Contents insurance covers you and other permanent members of the household in accordance with the terms and conditions. A tenant is not considered a permanent member of the household and must therefore have their own insurance.

If you have home insurance with DNB and rent out part of your home, you must remember to inform us so that you receive rental insurance as an addition. Remember that it is wise to have both home contents and home insurance with the same company. You will then only pay one deductible and receive a simpler settlement if your home is subject to an insurance event.
